Webuild: Braila Bridge, planned resurfacing work with new ultra-strong mix gets underway

Bucharest, 10 October 2024 – The planned completion of the Braila Bridge with the new ultra-strong asphalt mix developed by Webuild and approved by Romania’s National Company for Road Infrastructure Administration (CNAIR), has begun. The new road surface was proposed by Webuild to provide the bridge with the elasticity and resilience to support the heavy loads in transit in both directions. The ultra-strength of the new mix exceeds the contractual specifications and regulatory requirements and will be able to withstand traffic loads of exceptional magnitude.

The Braila Bridge over the Danube is continental Europe’s second-longest suspension bridge and a highly advanced engineering infrastructure. The project required highly skilled techniques, such as the construction of large-diameter piles, the excavation of very large and deep wells, and systems for the extraction of water from the underground aquifers.

Since the bridge opened to traffic in July 2023, the construction consortium led by Webuild (which took over from Astaldi) has worked together with the client to monitor and implement minor links with the motorway network and the condition of the road surface, which has never presented any structural risks. The Braila Bridge is a strategic infrastructure for the region, and has supported very heavy traffic since it opened, with more than a thousand trucks passing across it every week.

Work on the new road surface is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
